Buying or Selling a Home with Cryptocurrency in Georgia and Alabama

Short answer: Yes, you can use cryptocurrency to buy a home in Georgia or Alabama. In most sales, the crypto is converted to U.S. dollars before closing, and the closing attorney or title company receives dollars like any other sale. The work is in the planning: when to convert, how to show proof of funds, and making sure the seller, lender and closing attorney agree on the steps.

If you're buying with crypto

  • Financing: if you're using a loan, your lender sets the rules for crypto-funded down payments. Ask them early.

If you're selling and a buyer offers crypto

  • Most sellers receive U.S. dollars at closing, and the buyer handles the conversion. If you want to receive crypto directly, talk with your closing attorney and tax professional before you accept.
  • If you have a mortgage, the payoff is still made in dollars.
  • I check the buyer's proof of funds and timeline before you sign, the same as any cash offer.
